Hi, I’m Matilda McDonell and I play netball. I’m studying a Bachelor of Laws and Psychology (Honours) at UNSW. I chose UNSW because of the prestigious Law school here and also because of the Elite Athlete program and the amount of support they provide to athletes.
I think it’s really important to balance study with sport – there are a lot of studies about mind and body working together, so it’s always been important to me to study really hard and get a job as well as an athletic career. So finding the balance between mind and body has always been crucial for me, as both an athlete and a student.
I think the biggest challenges for me are definitely going to be time management and making sure that I’m controlling everything. From seeing my family enough, to playing netball, studying and seeing my friends too – I think working out that time is really crucial. But I think I’ll be sweet once I get that worked out.
With my degree I want to become a family lawyer and eventually end up working for the United Nations, focussing on gender equality. Combining that with professional netball is something I’ve always wanted to do.
My biggest goal in netball has always been to make a Suncorp Super Netball team, which I’ve now done. So my new goal this year is to take the court and improve as much as I can – as a player and a person. This year it’s all about growth for me. I’m really looking forward to the challenge and the opportunity to experience a whole different ball game! My team are amazing and being able to experience this with them is just phenomenal.
With uni, I’m most looking forward to the new experiences. There are going to be a lot of firsts for me, it’s going to be really exciting. I can’t wait to meet new people and study a degree that I’m really passionate about.
