2003 Ben Lexcen Sports Scholar Profiles

 

Miriam Bankovsky - Hockey (Philosophy)

Moving to UNSW to study her Philosophy Doctrate, Miriam also brings outstanding hockey abilities. Miriam has represented the ACT in the National Hockey League since 1994, represented Australia at the Under, 18 and Under 21 levels, represented Australia at the Junior World Cup in 1998 and was key member of the Australian Youth Squad from 1994-1998 . She has also been an AIS Scholarship holder.

Michelle Barrera - Equestrian (Science)

Michelle's sporting achievements to date are impressive. In 2000, Michelle was named NSW Junior Showjumping Rider Of The Year after placing 2nd in the Australian Junior Showjumping championships. In 2001, Michelle was a member of the NSW and National Young Riders squad. However, 2002 was even better for Michelle. 2002 was her best year to date, with Michelle becoming the youngest rider ever to win gold in a Pacific League World Cup event at the Sale World Cup Qualifier. Michelle also won silver (team) at the 2002 Asian Games and she was selected in the National Development squad.

Nick Baxter - Rowing (Construction Management)

Nick Baxter is a returning UNSW Sports Scholar in 2003. Nick's sporting successes so far have been numerous and certainly diverse. In 2002, Nick won gold at the Australian University Games with fellow Sports Scholar, Zac Kirkham. Nick also rowed at the World Uni Games In England, finishing 5th in the Mens Pair. In addition, Nick rowed in America at the Head of the Charles Regatta at Boston (finishing 2nd), Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia (1st) and the Princeton Chase finishing 3rd. Nick is currently ranked 4th in Australia for the Mens Sweep and is working hard to regain selection in the Australian side that heads to the World Championships in Italy in August and then goaling towards Athens in 2004. Nick is also a 3rd year Building Construction Management student.

Stephanie Butterworth - Rowing (Design)

Beginning her rowing career at Pymble Ladies College, Stephanie was a member of the illustrious 2001 PLC 1st Eight, winning the MLC Regatta, the Riverview Gold Cup, the NSW State Championships and finishing 2nd at the Australian National Championships in both the Schoolgirls and Junior Womens division. In 2002, Stephanie rowed for the UNSW Club, recording impressive results at the Australian National Championships, including winning the Under 19s Eights and the Lightweight Under 21 Quad Scull. All this success whilst studying full-time in her UNSW Design degree.

Alexandra Blackwell - Cricket (Medicine)

A returning Lexcen Scholar, Alex has had a wonderful 2002/2003 cricket season, starring for NSW in the National League Final series to earn selection in the Australian One-Day side for the Quadrangular Series in New Zealand in January. Good results from Alex earnt selection in the Ashes Test series in February. In the first Test, Alex hitting the winning runs in an extremely tight game whilst the second Test, she scored her maiden half-century and shared in a world record 5th wicket partnership with good friend Lisa Sthlaeker.

Sonya Chervonsky - Judo (Digital Media)

Introduced to Judo through the UNSW Judo Club's Schools Program in 1998, Sonya is showing amazing development in such a short space of time. After winning the Junior National Championships (52kg) the past two years, Sonya also won the Senior 52kg division in 2002. Following this success, Sonya won both the Junior and Senior Oceania titles and unfortunately was selected as a reserve for the Australian Commonwealth Games side. After training in Slovenia with their National Coach for three months late last year and also training in China with the National team, Sonya is continuing her progress in the sport as they head towards the Olympics in 2004.

James Day - Cricket (Arts/Education)

Schooled at Scots College, Jim represented GPS at the annual Schoolboy Cricket Carnival, scoring 312 runs at an average of 104 and took 8 wickets, averaging nine runs per wicket. Not surprisingly, he was named "Player Of The Carnival" and was selected in the NSW Schoolboys side that played Queensland Schoolboys.

Jonothan Dore - Trampolining (Engineering)

A returning scholar, Jonathon won the Qld State Championships in the double mini and finished in the top three at every major national event in the double mini tramp, trampoline and synchronised trampoline. He represented Australia at the 2001 World Championships in Denmark and the World Games in Japan where he finished in the top eight.

Matthew Dowle - Ultimate Frisbee (Science)

In the exciting new sport of Ultimate Frisbee, Matthew Dowle would be regarded as one of the game's best players. At 19, Matthew represented Australia for the first time at the World Championships in Germany, scoring the most goals, most defensive blocks and was selected in the All-Stars team. Since then, Matthew's rise has continued, representing Australia a further six times and leading the UNSW Club to the National Club Championships success for the last two years and winning the Most Valuable Player award as well. Matthew is in his Honours year of a Science degree.

Mark Gabriel - TaeKwonDo (Medicine)

Mark's sporting achievements to date are impressive. Over recent years, Mark has steadily progressed through various competitions, including winning gold at the Sydney West and Sydney Open Championships. More recently, Mark has starred at the State level, winning gold in the 72-78kg division as well gold at both the Eastern University Games and the Australian University Games in 2002. In recognition of this success, Mark was selected for the Australian Universities' "Green and Gold" Team.

Allira Gofers - Basketball (Engineering)

Allira's sporting talents are undoubted, yet its just a question of which sport to chose. On the basketball court, Allira has played in various junior representative age teams, progressing to the Sydney Comets team that plays in the Australian Basketball Association competition. Allira also represented the University of NSW with distinction at Eastern Uni Games and Australian Uni Games, winning selection in the Australian Universities' "Green and Gold" merit team. In Water Polo, Allira has starred for UNSW in the Sydney Grade competition and the National Water Polo Club Championships, again winning selection in the Australian Universities' "Green and Gold" merit team in 2002. Allira is in her 4th year Mechatronic and Biomedical Engineering degree.

Stuart Gomez - Badminton (Commerce/Economics)

A definite star on the rise, Stuart's results in 2002 saw him win the NSW Opens Mens singles and doubles titles, captained the NSW team to victory in the Australian Team and Individual Championships and remaining undefeated throughout, represented Australia in the Thomas Cup (Badminton's Davis Cup equivalent) and remained undefeated for the second consecutive year in all University singles and doubles competitions. All this success saw Stuart selected for the Australian Commonwealth squad for Manchester. Amazingly, Stuart combines this sporting success with studying Commerce & Economics.


William Hamlyn-Harris - Athletics (Architecture)

After a string of debilitating injuries that hampered William for a numbers of years, a change of coach and a new city has re-invigorated his performances. Now coached by national throwing coach, Rudolf Spoko, William won the National titles in 2001 and finished 2nd in 2002 and finished 4th in the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games. William is now working hard to qualify for the World Championships in Paris in July and then onto the 2004 Athens Olympics. William currently studies Architecture.


Peter Hatton - Mountain Bike (Mechanical Engineering)

Currently the Australian National Mountain Bike Series leader, Peter has won Round 2 and 3 of the series so far as well many other podium finishes in various State and National competitions. Peter's goal is to qualify for the 2004 Athens Olympics. Peter currently studies Mechanical Engineering.

Simon Herringa - Triathalon (Science)


The journey to sporting success for Simon Herringa has been filled with more than the odd hurdle. At 16, Simon was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. This major life scare has spurred Simon to enjoy life to its fullest and triathlon is a key part of his post-luekemia life. A member of the PowerBar Professional Triathlon team, Simon has recorded quality results in 2002/2003 season, including 13th overall in Race 2 of the Accenture National Triathlon Series, 3rd (Under 23s) in the Australian Triathlon Championships, and 14th in the Sorak International Triathlon in South Korea in June last year. Simon is also a scholarship holder with the NSW Institute of Sport. Somehow, Simon finds time to study Science (Food Science and Technology) at UNSW.

Erin Heyde - Basketball (Commerce)

A key member of the 2003 Womens National Basketball League's runners-up, The Sydney Flames, Erin has represented various Sutherland representative teams throughout her fledgling basketball career. Erin is in her 4th year of a Commerce and Economics degree.

Eszter Hortobagyi - Modern Pentathlete (Commerce)

Originally from Hungary, Eszter has years of international experience having represented Hungary for seven years including Gold at the Junior World Champion (1993 & 1994). After missing the Sydney Olympics due to the birth of her first child, Eszter hopes to represent Australia in Athens and is on the way with winning the Australian nationals in 2001 and 2002. Eszter studies Commerce and Marketing.

David Jenkins - Swimming (Medicine)

David's sporting achievements to date are impressive. In 2001, David won gold at the World Championships in the 4 x 100m relay. He also finished 4th at the National Championships in 50m and 5th in the 100m, after missing out by one place for Olympic selection the year before. In 2002, David finished 5th in the 100m at the National Open Long Course Championships whilst finishing 6th in the 50m. David also competed in various long and short course tournaments, both in Australia and overseas, throughout the year for mixed results.

Matilda Johnson - Netball (Social Science)

Identified as a talented netballer for some time, Matilda has represented various age representative side throughout her career to date. A NSW Institute of Sport Scholarship holder for the past two years, and a member of NSW's Under 19 side, Matilda will be looking for good performances in 2003 to springboard her into playing in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy in the future years. Matilda is in her 1st year of a Social Science (Criminology) degree.

Zac Kirkham - Rowing (Science)


In 2002, Zac represented Australia at the World University Rowing Championships with an inexperienced Mens Eight, finishing 9th in a tough international field. Upon returning to Australia, Zac rowed in the Mens Coxless Pairs with another UNSW Sports Scholar, Nick Baxter, at the Australian Uni Champs, beating a 3-time Olympian, Bo Hanson and current National representative, Dave Matthews. Zac is concentrating on making the National team for the world Championship in Italy in August and then hard for Athens in 2004. Zac is currently studying Honours in Science at UNSW.

Louise Maruan - Hockey (Science)

Lousie Maruan's sporting achievements are impressive. Louise has represented various age representative hockey teams throughout her junior career, including Sydney North Regional sides for two years. Since school, Louise has flourished further, representing NSW at both Under 18s and now Under 21s. The next progression is to represent NSW in the National Hockey League series. Louise somehow fits in her fulltime study for her Science degree.

Keely McNamara - Cycling (Science)

Having only taken up cycling in 2001, Keely has since been included in a Talent Identification Program at the Australian Institute of Sport for potential sprint cyclists. In the same year Keely won selection as part of the NSW U/19 Team to compete at the Women's National Club Championships, due to her strong performance at the ACT U/19 Women's Championships where she won bronze medals in the Criterium and Road Race. Keely is looking forward to a strong year of training in the hope of gaining selection for NSW and from there anything can happen.

Deon Moore - Hockey (Material Science and Engineering)

Originally from Cairns, Deon is in his first year of his UNSW Engineering degree. Deon is the current Queensland Under 18s hockey goalkeeper, and was unfortunate not to be selected for the Australian side at the National championships. Deon will play for the UNSW Hockey club.

Emma Polkinghorne - Water Polo (Science)

Hailing from Albury, Emma has represented the Victorian Under 20 team and was also a member of the Australian Girl's Youth Squad. She has been a member of the NSW country team for the past three years and has been named player of the CHS Inter Regional Championships.
Emma is the 2003 recipient of the Liz Weekes Waterpolo scholarship.

Michael Pruscino - Fencing (Commerce/Economics)

Michael began 2001, with selection for the NSW U/20 Junior Men's Epee Team. He then followed this up by winning the UTS Open and Sydney University Open Men's Epee as well as the State Under 20 Men's Individual Epee. These results saw Michael selected in the NSW Under 20 Junior Men's Epee Team in 2002. All of which was the catalyst for Michael winning the Australian National Under 20 Men's Individual Epee.

Luke Reilly - Hockey (Engineering)

A Lexcen Sports Scholar for the past two years, Luke has developed considerably through the UNSW Club and also through various junior representative sides including NSW Under 18s and NSW Under 21s to play an active part of the NSW Panthers team that plays in the National Hockey League. In addition to Luke's playing abilities, he acts as the UNSW Hockey Club's specialist Goal-Keeping Coach for seniors and juniors to further develop the next generation of athletes.

Nick Russell - Water Polo (Biomechanical Engineering)


Nick Russell is a Water Polo player to watch for the future. Nick has represented NSW and Australian Schoolboys in 2001 and 2002 and was recently named as the Most Valuable Player in the Test Series against New Zealand Schoolboys. Nick is also a key member of the NSW Under 20s side and was awarded a NSW Institute of Sport Scholarship in 2002 and 2003. Nick's next goal is to continue his Water Polo development, with the goal of selection in Australia's Under 20s and NSW Senior sides. Amazingly, Nick finds time in his training schedule to also study Biomechanical Engineering at UNSW.

David Treacy - Triathlon (Law/Commerce)


Combining the demanding triathlon training schedule and a Commerce / Law degree, David has recorded some impressive results. This year, David has already finished first and second in the two LOOK Series Triathlons at La Perouse so far. In addition, David has performed well in the National Accenture Series and hopes to record good results in the remaining Accenture and Olympic preparation races.

Luke Trickett - Swimming (Commerce/Economics)


A returning UNSW Sports Scholar, Luke has made great steps in his attempts to become Australia's premier breaststroker. A member of the Telstra Dolphins, Luke represented Australia in the Oceania Championships In Noumea in 2002, winning gold in the 200m (setting an Oceanic record), 2nd in the 50m and 100m. He also swam at various long and short course Championships for solid results and recently won the 100m and 200m Breaststoke and won bronze in the 50m breaststroke at the NSW State Open Championships in January 2003. Luke is studying Commerce/Economics.

Hayley Warren - Volleyball (Arts)

Hayley's sporting achievements to date are impressive. In Volleyball, Hayley was selected for Combined High Schools and has played for both NSW Under 17s and NSW Under 19s. But Hayley's sporting skills do not end there. Hayley has also represented Hawkesbury in the State League Netball competition for the past two years and was also selected for the Western Sydney Academy of Sport.

Jono West - Rugby (Science)

Jono's sporting achievements to date are extremely impressive yet higher honours are destined for the extremely talented Gordon rugby player. A resident of junior age representative rugby teams, including NSW & Australian Schoolboys, Under 17s and Under 19s sides, Jono is now a key member of the NSW Waratah squad. Jono has played for Australia 'A' vs France last year and against the British Lions in 2001. Jono studies Science (Prosthetics and Orthotics).

Leighton Wren - Karate (Arts/Education)


Leighton is not a man to mess with. Leighton is currently the National Junior champion and finished 3rd in the Senior division. He is also the reigning NSW Senior and Junior champion for the last two years running. Leighton has represented Australia at various international tournaments including winning gold at the 2002 Australia vs Indonesia Challenge in Jakarta. Leighton is in his 3rd year of an Education degree.

Stefan Zlatkovic - Water Polo (Optometry)

Stefan began his Water Polo playing days with the UNSW Club and is fast emerging as a very talented player destined for higher honours. In 2002, Stefan captained the NSW Schoolboys side and was selected in the Australian Schoolboys team. Stefan is also a member of the Australian Under 20s squad and is a current NSW Institute of Sport endorsed athlete. Stefan is in his first year of an Optometry degree.
