2002 Ben Lexcen Sports Scholars

 

Nicholas Baxter, Rowing
In 2001 Nick represented Australia at the World Championships in Lucerne finishing top eight. His team won the National Championships in the Men's coxless four and won Silver Medals in the Men's Coxless Pair and in the Eight. Nick also won a Silver Medal at the U23 World Championships in Copenhagen
Alex Blackwell, Cricket
Alex is a member of the Australian U23 team, a NSWIS scholar, a member of the National Champion NSW team and captain of the Australian Champion NSW U19 team.
Briony Clare, Rowing
Briony was selected as a member of the Junior Women's Eight for the World Championships. As the stroke of the Pymbal VIII she led the crew to an undefeated state season including the NSW State Championships before finishing 2nd at the Australian Rowing Championships. She is currently ranked number one in the Junior Women's double scull and number two in the single scull.
Jonathon Dore - Gymnastics/Trampolining
A returning scholar, Jonathon won the Qld State Championships in the double mini and finished in the top three at every major national event in the double mini tramp, trampoline and synchronised trampoline. He represented Australia at the 2001 World Championships in Denmark and the World Games in Japan where he finished top eight.
Greg Eyears - Athletics
Returning scholar and in his final year, Greg is continuing to shave his times in the 110m Hurdles and in the 100m. He is currently ranked 4th in Australia in the hurdles and won the 2001 NSW Championships. At the 2001 Australian University Games he picked up two silvers and a bronze.
Stuart Gomez - Badminton
A second year scholar, Stuart had an extremely successful 2001 winning the men's singles, doubles and mixed doubles at the Qld Open and spearheaded the UNSW team to ECG and AUG victories remaining undefeated throughout both tournaments. He currently has a national ranking of 4th, which has him selected in the 2002 Commonwealth Games squad.
Peter Hatton - Mountain Biking
Peter, a returning scholar gained selection for Australia at the World Championships and World Cup finals in 2001 finishing 7th at the North American Nationals and is ranked top 30 in the World. He finished 2nd in the State series and is the NSW U19 Champion.
Zac Kirkham - Rowing
A returning scholar, Zac picked up a Silver medal last year in the Grand Challenge Cup at the Royal Henley Regatta and won the lead up event at the Reading Regatta. He has been invited to compete in the national Selection Regatta. He has again been included in the Kings Cup squad for the Nationals.
Ben Lee - Karate
Currently ranked 2nd in Oceania after his Silver Medal at the Oceania Karate Championships in Vanuatu. His results have led him to selection for the Australian Men's Kumite team, and the State Kumite and Kata teams. In 2001 he won the Yoseikan Tournament of Champions and captained the UNSW intervarsity team to a Gold medal
Emma Polkinghorne - Water Polo
From Albury, Emma has represented the Victorian U20 team and was also a member of the Australian Girl's Youth Squad. She has been a member of the NSW country team for the past three years and has been named player of the CHS Inter Regional Championships.
Luke Reilly - Hockey                            RURAL SCHOLARSHIP
Luke, a 2001 scholar, has been in the NSW U21 squad for the last two years and will this year be the first string keeper for the team. He was selected to play for eventual winners Sydney at the U21 State Championships and has kept the club competitive in its reintroduction to Premier League
Timothy Richardson - Cricket                 LAWSON/SLATER SCHOLARSHIP
Tim is in his last year of the scholarships and has already scored 500 first grade runs at an average of 40 this season, including two centuries. This followed on from topping the aggregates on the Cricket Club's UK tour during winter
Jo Ruba - Goalball
Jo, a vision impaired athlete, has already represented Australia at the Paralympics and will compete at this year at the World Championships. She has won gold medals at the previous four National Championships
Karinya Turnbull - Diving/Gymnastics/Ski
A superb all round athlete, Karinya was a member of the 2002 Australian Ski Freestlye French Cup team, placing 3rd, was a member of the Olympic Development Squad in Diving and is top 8 in Australian in 1m, 3m and platform and previously was a member of the Olympic Development Squad for gymnastics
Luke Trickett - Swimming
One of Australia's best up and coming breaststrokers, Luke won the 100m and placed 2nd in the 200m breaststroke events at the 2001 summer State Championships. He placed 3rd and 4th in 200m breaststroke at the Telstra Grand Prix Series and is a member of the NSW Team Millenium.
Joel Wing - Water Ski
Joel, doing his honours year this year, broke the Australian Tricks record twice this year and represented Australia at the World Championships in Italy. Joel made the finals finishing in the top eight in the world, the best result by an Australian in over 10 years. He won the State tricks and overall title and was the highest placing Australian, finishing 4th, at one of the largest professional tournaments in the World, the Moomba Masters
